A Comprehensive Approach to Writing and Expression

At Sterling School, we know that writing can be one of the most challenging skills for students with language based learning disabilities, and one of the most empowering when taught well. Our writing program breaks the process down into clear, manageable steps so that every student can build real skills and confidence at their own pace. Rather than relying on a single method, our teachers draw from several proven, research-based approaches (see below) and tailor their instruction to what each individual student needs.

How We Teach Writing

✦ We use explicit, structured instruction. Teachers clearly model each skill before students practice it independently

✦ Writing is taught step by step, from choosing words and building sentences all the way through to organized paragraphs and essays

✦ Every lesson is hands-on and multi-sensory, helping students engage with writing in ways that match how they learn best

✦ Teachers, speech-language pathologists, and reading specialists collaborate closely so each student gets consistent, connected support

What Students Learn

✦ We use explicit, structured instruction. Teachers clearly model each skill before students practice it independently

✦ Word-level skills: vocabulary, grammar, and how to choose precise language

✦ Sentence-level skills: how to construct clear, varied sentences

✦ Paragraph and essay skills: how to organize ideas logically and communicate them effectively in writing

✦ Writing as a thinking tool: students use writing to take notes, summarize what they've read, and develop their ideas, building both literacy and critical thinking skills

Supporting The Whole Writer

Many of our students find it hard to get started, stay organized, or manage the many steps involved in writing. Our program directly addresses these challenges by teaching writing as a process not just a product.

Students are guided through every stage: planning their ideas, drafting, revising, editing, and presenting a final piece. This structured approach helps build the executive functioning skills that make writing and learning in general, more manageable.

A Collaborative Approach

Classroom teachers, speech language pathologists, and reading specialists work as co teachers during the writing period to ensure every student receives targeted instruction. Activities are drawn from all writing approaches to best meet each student where they are.
